Street Food Graduates from the Hot Dog
posted by Zach Patton
Details has a roundup and a slideshow of some of the tastiest street food in the nation -- everything from tamales to "sparerib tips tossed in tangy black-bean sauce" to some amazing, heavenly goodness called "bacon jam."
Needless to say, it's a whole lot more than hot dogs (although the list does include some great-sounding franks).
As I wrote in this month's issue of Governing, street food in the U.S. is really branching out. Many cities -- from Portland, Oregon, to Washington, D.C. -- are actively trying to recruit new vendors, especially ones that will serve items other than the standard franks and pretzels.
Meanwhile, LA is confiscating and destroying bacon dog carts.

What's interesting about center cities, however, is that there are increasing returns to scale. As the population of a dense place grows, the city begins to function better. It becomes easier to develop the revenue to provide good public services.
